Money and costs in Florida

Florida has no state personal income tax, but visitors pay sales tax, local lodging taxes, tolls and other travel costs. Winter stays on the Gulf islands and in Palm Beach can be expensive. Compare dates and regions using the final stay total; mandatory resort fees belong in the displayed hotel price.

Sales tax and lodging taxes

Florida's general state sales-tax rate is 6%, and many counties add a discretionary surtax. Check the current county rate instead of assuming one statewide total. Many grocery products and qualifying medicines are exempt, while restaurant meals and prepared food for immediate consumption are generally taxable.

Short hotel stays can also carry local tourist-development or other lodging taxes in addition to state sales tax and county surtax. The combination depends on the county and, in some places, the municipality. Read the property's itemized tax and fee breakdown and compare the final total for your full stay.

Seasonal price swings and resort fees

Timing can make a substantial difference to a Florida budget. Winter and early spring are popular for beach and island stays in Naples, Sanibel, Captiva, the Keys and Palm Beach. If dates are flexible, compare May, November and summer stays too, while allowing for weather, school holidays and local events; there is no fixed seasonal discount that applies to every property.

Resorts may charge mandatory resort or amenity fees, but the FTC rule requires those fees in the prominent displayed total. Government taxes and optional extras can be shown separately before payment. Check parking charges and whether parking is optional, and budget for beach or park admission and parking where applicable.

Tolls, tipping, and cash

Toll roads are common, particularly around Miami, on Florida's Turnpike and on the Sanibel Causeway. Review the rental company's toll and administrative charges in advance. For dining, around 15–20% is a common voluntary-tip guideline, with a dollar or two per bag or drink elsewhere. Check any existing service charge first: it is not legally the same as a voluntary tip, so ask whether gratuity is included and how the charge is distributed.

Cards are accepted almost everywhere, but a little cash is handy for small vendors, parking meters, and tips. Prices at the most exclusive addresses - Worth Avenue, the Palm Beach and Amelia Island resorts - run well above the state average.
